Why We Need CTEM – Latest Article in Pipeline Publication

Gartner’s Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM) model has been getting a lot of attention. It suggests an effective framework for the space that we serve with Orchestra Group’s Harmony Purple all-in-one platform designed to meet the cybersecurity needs of small and medium sized enterprises.

For a better foundation on the need for a new framework like CTEM we recommend reading the article by Orchestra Group’s CTO, Jacob Ukelson, that was just published in the December 2023 issue of Pipeline. For those of you who don’t know, Pipeline is much more than a trade publication for the IT and communications industry. It is an information center designed for and advised by leading technical executives from around the world. Over 2000 executives serve on its advisory board.

A New Framework for Cybersecurity

The latest article from Jacob is the third in a series he has contributed that discuss the role of AI in cybersecurity – both from the defender and attacker points of view. In this latest article “A New Framework for Cybersecurity”, Jacob analyses where within the typical cybersecurity stack organizations are most vulnerable. The analysis is especially interesting because it brings together data from a wide variety of sources – from trends in cyber insurance to cyber-attack MTTR rates – to make the case that it is the failure of current risk management tools and technologies that are leaving companies open to attack. That is the reason Gartner has identified the CTEM framework (Continuous Threat Exposure Management) as key to significantly reducing cyber risk. As Gartner states, “Security and risk management leaders must initiate and mature a continuous threat exposure management program to stay ahead of threats.”

The AI Difference for CTEM

So CTEM is clearly needed. However, like other security frameworks we have seen before, they can look great on paper, but actual implementation is where they often break down. Jacob explains why AI capabilities such as attack path scenarios and digital cyber twinning technology are critical to turning a the promising CTEM framework into an actual program for meaningful risk reduction.
